r.i.p. pontiac--1926-2009
THE ORIGINAL MUSCLECAR-THE GTO
as expected pontiac was given a one way ticket to automotive heaven today as general motors announced that it would kill off the brand by the end of next year.

it was thought that the line was ready to stage a comeback with several new models that were critically acclaimed including the Solstice two seat sports car and the G8 performance sedan but the economy and federally mandated gas mileage requirements along with GM's plan to pare itself down to a more agile smaller company with fewer brands sounded the death knell for the chief.

the brand first appeared in Oakland motor company showrooms in 1926 after making it's debut at the new york auto show and quickly caught on with the public. it was one of the first brands to market to women in the thirties. in the fifties the brand stood for speed at GM while in the 60's it created the musclecar by stuffing a 389ci engine into a compact le mans and calling it a GTO. The GTO became a legend and Pontiac was on its way to being GM's performance brand.
